“Minimum wage” is that which enables a worker and his/her family to afford, maybe, a little more than the bare necessities and not living just hand to mouth. The SC made an act in the year 1984 to ensure that there is no exploitation of the workers and they are compensated accordingly for their work. The minimum wage should also make him/her capable of providing education and medical requirements for his/her family. In Bangalore the minimum wage is set to Rs. 5044. Refer the following link for more details http://www.deccanherald.com/content/100847/karnataka-government-revises-minimum-wages.html

Every worker is entitled for the minimum wage as this is a fundamental right. If the employer fails to compensate the employee, the domestic worker in our example, then the employee can file a case against the employer on the basis of denying him/her his/her fundamental right. The main idea behind SC enforcing this law to provide minimum wages is to eradicate abusing of workers.

The shaded portion indicates those employments, which are both scheduled ones and also employ more than 1000 workers. Here the government is obliged to notify a minimum wage and an application can be made to the High Court. In practice, a minimum wage may not be notified for every scheduled employment. For example, in 1996 in Karnataka there were 61 employments in the schedule but only 37 of them had a fixed minimum wage.
